Product Abuse Prevention

Accidents are a part of life, but there are many ways we can avoid them.

When it comes to household products, reading the label and following instructions can prevent injury and harm. Intentionally abusing products, for any reason, is dangerous and can cause serious injury to yourself and others.

Product abuse is a growing trend that is perpetuated by Internet challenges, pranks, and hoaxes. It’s important to not only resist these dangerous games, but to encourage the people around us to as well. When used properly, household products can improve lives by helping maintain our environments. When used improperly, the consequences are limitless. For information on inhalant abuse, one of the most dangerous forms of product abuse in which household products are inhaled for the purposes of getting high, visit our Inhalant Abuse Prevention program page.

National Inhalants & Poisons Awareness Week

Want to get more involved with preventing intentional product abuse? Join us during the National Inhalants and Poisons Awareness Week (NIPAW) observed every third week of March.

What is National Inhalants & Poisons Awareness Week?

National Inhalants & Poisons Awareness Week (NIPAW) is an annual, community level program that takes place the third week in March to highlight understanding and education around inhalant abuse prevention and poison prevention. Developed in 1992 by the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition, NIPAW is an extension of National Poison Prevention Week (NPPW).

Why get involved in National Inhalants & Poisons Awareness Week?

You can get educated, get involved, and be a part of the solution to prevent inhalant abuse and save lives. A child is 50% less likely to try an inhalant if an adult has spoken to them about the dangers of inhalant abuse.  In addition, 90% of accidental poisonings occur at home- by keeping products stored out of reach and out of sight, you can prevent accidents.

Talk. They will listen.

This is a week to engage your children, students, employees, and consumer base around the issue of inhalant abuse, in order to spread awareness and education to help prevent product abuse.
