Washington D.C. – The Alliance for Consumer Education (ACE) released the following statement today, attributed to Beth Ludwick, Executive Director of ACE, after ACE launched resources to educate consumers about coronavirus (COVID-19) and help stop the spread of misinformation, which is now considered an “infodemic” by public health officials.

“ACE commends the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other institutions for their efforts to combat the infodemic of coronavirus false cures and fake safety measures. Americans should prepare, not panic.

To support this work, ACE has launched ConsumerEd.org/PrepareforCoronavirus to educate consumers about the virus, including how to clean and disinfect effectively, what products to use, how to prepare their home, and tips from the CDC about stopping the spread of germs. The CDC should be everyone’s first stop for information about the coronavirus.

Coronavirus is one of the easiest classes of virus to kill. Coronavirus is used to describe any virus in the coronavirus family, and prior to this outbreak, there were seven known strains, including SARs. That is why you may see coronavirus already listed on a cleaning product’s label. However, these products did not know about the new strain of coronavirus before this outbreak.

Reading the label to make sure you are using a disinfectant correctly is an important step in lowering your risk. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a list of products that are effective against even tougher viruses than COVID-19, and should therefore be effective against COVID-19. These products have been approved by the EPA based on their Emerging Viral Pathogens Guidance.”
