On Thursday, July 25^th, the Alliance for Consumer Education visited the YMCA Thingamajig Convention in Maryland to present information on disease prevention and proper hygiene habits. The convention brings together more than 4,000 students ranging in age from six to thirteen years old from around the Metropolitan Washington area to display their eco-friendly inventions and innovative solutions to real-life problems.

The program kicked off with an opening from Miss America 2013 who welcomed students, families, and staff to the event. Students from various YMCA camps then made their way around to different informational booths presented by diverse organizations, such as ACE.

ACE’s booth had loads of activities that students could participate in to learn more about stopping germs. In addition to a tri-fold poster explaining ACE and the organization’s mission, there was also a “Summer Safety Tips” Packets that students and caregivers were able to take home with them. 

There was also a raffle for an Ace Clean Gift package, consisting of a tote bag, t-shirt, baseball, Marvel poster, and more.

ACE facilitated three different activities to teach students about healthy habits.

• First, students learned how germs spread using a “Glitter Germs” activity. This involves placing lotion (sweat) on one student’s hand which is then covered with glitter (germs). The student then rubs their hands together and high-fives another student. The result is the passing of germs from one person to another and so forth down a line of participants. Students were quickly able to pick up on just how easily germs spread and thoroughly enjoyed the activity.

• Second, Ace Clean and his team taught students how to sneeze correctly using a “Sneeze Bottle.” To do this, Ace Clean used a squirt water bottle to demonstrate what happens when individuals do not cover their mouth when sneezing. Ace Clean then covered his mouth using his elbow to demonstrate that no water gets on the students, and that this is therefore the proper way to sneeze.

• Finally, ACE’s table had a station where students were able to color in a page of Ace Clean and take a picture with him as a concluding activity.

ACE was honored to be one of the representatives sharing important health information with participants, and thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the convention as a whole.
